Signs of Cold Stress in Pitch pine
Symptoms
Pitch pine exhibits exceptional cold hardiness, but winter temperatures should ideally remain above 30℉. Should the temperature fall below this point, while immediate changes might not be apparent in winter, branches could become fragile and parched by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
During spring, remove any lifeless branches that have not developed fresh foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Pitch pine
Symptoms
Pitch pine does not fare well in elevated temperatures. When the temperature surpasses 70℉, it can lead to considerable leaf shedding, and in extreme instances, the entire plant may wilt and perish.
Solutions
Remove the scorched and desiccated sections. Relocate the plant to an area offering protection from the intense midday and afternoon sun, or employ a shade cloth for cover. Hydrate the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
