Signs of Cold Stress in Western hemlock
Symptoms
Western hemlock exhibits exceptional cold hardiness, but winter temperatures should remain above 14℉. Should temperatures fall below this point, while no immediate changes might be apparent in winter, branches could become fragile and desiccated by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
During spring, remove any lifeless branches that have not produced fresh foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Western hemlock
Symptoms
Western hemlock does not tolerate elevated temperatures well. When temperatures surpass 60℉, it may shed a considerable number of leaves, and in extreme instances, the entire plant could wilt and perish.
Solutions
Cut off any parts that are scorched by the sun and dried out. Relocate the plant to an area offering protection from the midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade cloth for cover. Water the plant in the morning and evening to ensure the soil remains damp.
