What is Cyst Nematode?

This disease is caused by several species of plant-parasitic nematodes in the genus Heterodera and Globodera. These nematodes thrive in soil and enter roots to feed, eventually forming hardened cysts—essentially protective shells that contain hundreds of eggs.

When the female dies, her body hardens into a cyst that protects the eggs from harsh conditions. These cysts can remain in the soil for many years, even without a host plant, making eradication difficult.

  • Avoid disturbing infested soil to limit spread to other garden areas.

  • Improve soil health by adding compost to encourage beneficial microbes that help suppress nematodes.
  • Rotate crops yearly, avoiding planting susceptible vegetables in the same location.

There is no single cure for cyst nematodes, but a combination of cultural, biological, and sometimes chemical tools can help reduce their impact.

  • Plant nematode-resistant varieties when available.
  • Use soil-building practices such as adding compost, cover cropping, and maintaining good soil structure.
  • Grow biofumigant cover crops like mustard or marigolds, which naturally suppress nematodes.
  • Solarize soil by covering moist soil with clear plastic for 4–6 weeks during the hottest part of summer.

Chemical Treatment Options

For home gardeners, chemical nematicides are rarely recommended because they can be harmful to beneficial soil life and may require special licensing. Always check local regulations and product labels before considering chemical controls.

Step-by-Step Treatment Procedures

  • Identify affected areas through visual symptoms and soil testing, if available.
  • Remove severely infested plants and avoid replanting susceptible crops in the area.
  • In late summer, solarize the soil to reduce nematode populations.
  • Add organic matter and plant a nematode-suppressing cover crop in fall.
  • Choose resistant or less susceptible crops for the following growing season.

Expected Timeline for Recovery

Improvement may begin within one season when soil health practices are used consistently. Significant nematode population reductions often take 2–3 years of crop rotation and soil building.
